Bekonscot Model Village and Railway in Beaconsfield UK is the world's original model village and railway begun as a private gauge 1 model railway and village in 1928. It was opened to the public in 1929 has raised over 7 million dollars for charity. With more than ten scale miles of gauge 1 railway (1:32 scale on G scale rails) the 1 1/2 acre landscaped model village consists of six 1:12 scale towns and villages, a large number of animated scenes, as well as a ride on railroad, remote control boat pond, large children's play area, gift shop, snack and picnic facilities. The buildings in the model villages are built at 1:12 scale, which makes them a bit out of scale with the trains, people and vehicles, but careful positioning and landscaping keeps that from becoming annoying. Bekonscot's outstanding website has videos of the trains, a history and intersting historical photos, details of the landscaping and modelling as well as the operation of the trains. In addition it has full information on reaching the model village which is roughly 45 minutes by train from London, close to Windsor.
