Guide Review - Kemper Clay Cutters

Kemper pattern cutters are standard shape cutters used to make uniform cuts in clay and clay like materials. Ranging in size from 3/16 of an inch to 1 1/2 inches their size makes them useful for a range of miniature modelling projects. The generous one inch length of the tubes for the cutters means you can make short shaped canes for flower or leaf slices. Lengths of shaped clay are expelled from the tube by pressing gently on the spring loaded nail at the top of the cutter.

Cutters need to be dusted with talcum in order to cut cleanly through clay, to help keep the clay from sticking to the cutter.

The standard shapes in sets are a circle, a teardrop/leaf, a heart and a five petaled flower or rounded star shape. For miniature baking the smallest pattern shapes (3/16 inch) and the rose cutter sets are the most useful, although there is also a square set with sizes from 3/8 to 3/4 inch which are useful for making square cakes and miniature bars or for cutting mosaic canes into standard sized tiles for floors or walls.

The cutters are easily cleaned although the pushing nail in the spring loaded cutters does not fit the cutter shape, acting only as a helper instead of a shaped punch expeller.

Price sets range from $7 to $15.00 depending on size and type.
