Beginning a Display Terrain

By , About.com Guide

Display terrains are used for all miniature scales. The same techniques used with model railroads can be used for everything from Christmas scenes to wargames.

The basis of many railroad scenes is a layer of insulation foam carved to shape.

This model railroad show had several examples of scenic terrain under construction. There were at least ten different techniques used for trees, lots of techniques for rocks and both flowing and still water. One scene which had appeared as a standard forest at a previous show had been transformed to an early fall snow scene with great success.

The creators of great scenery are happy to talk about their favorite techniques and products. Many of these techniques are easy to use across any scale of miniature. This shot shows the underlying terrain being built using layers of foam insulation.
