When a model railroad is based on a historical time period, or a models local scenes, the modeller often becomes very skilled at creating buildings based on simple photographs. If you want to create specific buildings for a Christmas village or other display of model buildings, your local railroad show may be a good source of information on scratch building and lighting techniques.
Model railroad builders are also good at creating visual interest in a scene where the main item (the train) only appears briefly. They have many ways of presenting similar viewpoints which are worth using in other miniature scenes.
