  • 1621 Mayflower settlers first Thanksgiving
  • 1652 First Coffee house opens in London
  • 1650's China Tea arrives in England, introduced in coffee houses

1700's

  • 1728 First cast iron stoves in use, five plate or jamb stoves

  • 1738 Valve-type flush toilet invented by J. F. Brondel
  • 1740's Closed cast iron stoves in production
  • 1740 Benjamin Franklin creates the Pennsylvania Fireplace (Franklin Stove)

  • 1775–1783 American Revolution
  • 1780 Thomas Robinson designs first open cooking range, fire was not enclosed. Common in houses by the 1830's
  • 1789-1799 French Revolution

  • 1794 First Mail Coach leaves Bristol for London
  • 1796 Count Rumsford writes on how to improving chimney efficiency, Rumsford Fireplace designed
  • 1798 Gas used to light the main buildings of the Soho Factory Steam Engine Works in Birmingham, England

1800's

  • 1802 First closed top cooking range 'Kitchener' patented by George Bodley
  • 1803-1814 Napoleonic Wars
  • 1805 Oliver Evens designs first refrigeration machine
  • 1807 First public gas street lamps in Pall Mall, London

1810 - 1819

  • 1810 Englishman Peter Durand patents tin canisters as a means of storing food
  • 1812-1814 War of 1812
  • 1815 Napoleon returns to France and is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo
  • 1819 First steam powered ship (with paddle wheel), crosses the Atlantic from Savannah, Georgia to Liverpool, England

1820-1829

  • 1820's Step Top cookstoves appear, first oil wells drilled in West Virginia
  • 1824 First dinosaur described scientifically
  • 1825 First passenger railway operates in England

1830 - 1839

  • 1830 First functional hand crank sewing machine invented by French tailor Barthelemy Thimonnier.
  • 1835 First pre packaged Royal Baking Powder on sale in England
  • 1835-1836 Texas Revolution
  • 1837 Beginning of Queen Victoria's Reign, Passenger rail service begins between London and Birmingham, John Deere invents steel plough
  • 1838-1842 First Afghan War
  • 1839 Tin coated steel cans widely in use. First India tea goes on sale in London, Daguerre developes the first daguerreotype photo
  • 1839–1842 First Opium War

1840 - 1849

  • 1840 First postage stamps,Penny Black and Twopence Blue
  • 1841–1867 Pioneers go west on the Oregon trail
  • 1844First inner city telegraph between Washington and Baltimore
  • 1845 Start of Irish potato famine, Victoria and Albert introduce Christmas Tree, coffee consumption in England grows from 1 oz per year in 1800 to 2 lbs per person/year
  • 1846–1847 Mexican American War
  • 1847 First British Chocolate bar manufactured by Fry (bitter)
  • 1849 California Gold Rush begins

1850 - 1859

  • 1850's Issac Singer creates first commercially successful foot treadle sewing machine
  • 1851 The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations -The Crystal Palace Exibition. The first water closets were exhibited here and became the first public flush toilets. A penny was charged for their use. Money raised at the exhibition was used to fund the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum and the Natural History Musuem in London. Australian Gold Rush begins
  • 1854–1856 Crimean War
  • 1854 Florence Nightingale takes 38 volunteer nurses to the Crimea. Japan opens to the West
  • 1855 Englishman named Grimwade takes out a patent for producing milk in dried form, baby bottles and rubber nipples introduced
  • 1856–1860 Second Opium War
  • 1857 The first American patent for a toilet, the plunger closet, granted
  • 1858 Can opener is invented, replacing the hammer and chisel as a means of opening cans, first fish and chip shop opens in Oldham, London. Cariboo Gold Rush. Mason jar with screw lid patented
  • 1858–1869 Construction of the Suez Canal
  • 1859 Charles Darwin Publishes On the Origin of Species

1860 - 1869

  • 1860 The first watercloset on the European continent imported from England for the sole use of Queen Victoria in castle Ehrenburg (Coburg, Germany)
  • 1861 First edition of Mrs Beetons book of Household Management
  • 1861–1865 American Civil War
  • 1865 First large scale meat canning factory set up by the British admiralty Velocipede (forerunner of the bicycle) appears
  • 1866 Cattle drives begin on Chisholm trail.
  • 1867 Two cylinder steam powered motorcycle invented
  • 1869 U.S. Transcontinental Railroad completed. First patent issued for a vacuum cleaner (hand pumped)

1870 - 1879

  • round top trunks popular to keep your trunk on the top of the train load.
  • 1870 First all metal bicycle appears, penny farthing bicycles become popular
  • 1876 First refrigerated ship built by Frenchman Charles Tellier, allows transport of foodstuffs around the world, First telephone tested by Alexander Graham Bell, Bissel patents the first carpet sweeper
  • 1872 invention of the hair crimper allows women to have fine wavy hairstyles.
  • 1877 Edison patents phonograph
  • 1879 Edison patents the light bulb

1880 - 1889

  • 1880's Cast iron baths become more common in homes, Thomas Crapper's plumbing company builds flush toilets under royal warrant
  • 1880-1881 First Boer War (Transvaal War)
  • 1881–1914 Construction of the Panama Canal
  • 1883 First commercial electricity generating station begins operation in Manhattan
  • 1883 First Espress d'Orient leaves Paris for Budapest
  • 1883 Transcontinental railroad reaches Portland Oregon
  • 1885 First commercial automobile (three wheeled) built by Karl Friedreich Benz, Gotleib Dailmer builds the first gas powered motorcycle. Trans Canada (CPR) railroad completed.
  • 1886 Daimler builds first commercial four wheeled vehicle with an internal combustion engine. Coca Cola goes on sale, Centennial exhibition held in Philadelphia
  • 1888 Eastman patents the hand held camera
  • 1889 Tour Eiffel completed

1890 - 1899

  • 1890's Cadbury's produce 1st milk chocolate bar, Pneumatic tired bicycles become common means of transport for men and women
  • 1890 Vincent Van Gogh dies. Worlds first electric railway passes under the Thames. Massacre at Wounded Knee in South Dakota. Corrugated cardboard box is invented by Robert Gair
  • 1891 First Electric Kettle
  • 1892 Rules for basketball are published by James Naismith
  • 1893 Panic of 1893 (American Depression)
  • 1894 Shredded wheat invented in Denver Colorado by Henry Perky
  • First Sears Roebuck catalogue that features more than watches and jewelry (sewing machines, firearms, buggies, some clothing1896 Panic of 1896 (American Depression)
  • 1896 Henry Ford tests his first vehicle the quadracycle
  • 1896–1800 Klondike Gold Rush
