Supplies for Making a Square Box

Here's what you need to make a square paper box.

  • Printer
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape

How to Use the Paper Box Template

Download our paper box template and assemble it according to the following instructions (most computer users should be able to right-click the box image above and save the template).

  • Print the paper box template onto a full sheet paper.
  • Cut the template out on the black lines.
  • Fold on the dotted lines.
  • Glue the flaps to the inside of the box so no one can see them.
  • Do not glue the top flap if you want the box to be able to open and close.

Choosing Paper to Make a Square Box

The paper you use determines how sturdy your box is. You can make decorative boxes from regular paper, such as for Christmas tree decorations or strings of party decorations. It's best to use heavy construction paper, cardboard, or cardstock for gift boxes, however. If you want to make a box from a material too thick or stiff to run through your printer, you can print out the template on plain white printer paper, then tape it to the stiffer material and cut around the template.

You can use boxes made from cardboard for shipping by enlarging the template as described below. This is a thrifty option if you have cardboard that you would otherwise recycle. You don't have to pay for a shipping box or find a reuseable one when you create a box with this template!

Making Larger Boxes

You can enlarge the square box template and print it on multiple sheets of paper to make a larger box. Or, change the size of the image with your photo management software. Select a larger size but keep the dimensions the same. Don't accidentally make it taller or wider out of proportion or it won't fold into a square box.

Remember, when printing a size larger than the paper in the printer, allow the image to print on multiple pages rather than choosing the "print to fit" option on a single page. To make a box with an image that covers multiple pages, carefully cut the image out on each page and tape the pieces together where they match up. Now you have a larger template to cut the foldable box from a larger piece of cardstock, poster board, or cardboard.

Ideas for Decorating a Paper Box

When using these boxes for party favors or gifts, consider adding a personal touch to make them special. You can print them on colored or patterned paper, or break out your craft supplies to decorate them. Washi tape and stickers are always cute additions, or you can use markers to create your own patterns. Rubberstamps, origami paper, and even bingo daubers can add some color to your paper boxes.
