Next, you will paint a base coat on the poles to give them a smooth, white finish. Most real horse show poles and fences are either natural colored wood or painted white with red, green, yellow or blue stripes.

Spread newspaper on your work surface to protect it against paint drips. Insert the ends of the poles in a block of styrofoam to keep them upright while you paint them. Once one coat dries, flip the poles over and paint the rest of them. If you don't have a piece of styrofoam, you can also use a ball of aluminum foil, some floral foam, or a cup filled with pebbles.

Paint the entire pole white using even strokes to get a smooth finish. If you missed a spot, go back and touch it up. Don't forget to paint the ends of your poles, too.
