List of Required Materials:

  • Scraps of bias fabric binding tape in red, yellow, navy blue and white.
  • Scraps of Fusible Fabric Webbing, or hemming tape.
  • Sewing Iron
  • Sharp scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread to sew pillow edges.
  • Small amount of quilt batting for stuffing pillows.
  • Scale Diagram of Naval Flag designs Available as a pdf file showing flags drawn in a scale which renders them as 15 inch pillows for a 1:12 scale scene. Each design is a letter in the international signal system, and each flag has a meaning, which is written under the letter and call sign and above the pillow design.

To Make

  • Print off the flag design sheet and cut appropriate sections of tightly woven colored fabric or unfolded bias tape to the sizes shown (for 15 inch pillows in 1:12 scale) or to the size you want for your design.
  • If making 1:12 scale pillows, add a 1/8 inch seam allowance to the outer color for the top of the pillow.
  • Cut a plain piece of fabric for the pillow back the size of the pillow.
  • Cut a piece of iron on fusible webbing the size of each of the applique pieces and position the appliques on the pillow tops.
  • Press into place with the iron.
  • When the appliques are all in place, fit a pillow front and back, right sides together and stitch three sides of the pillow together on the wrong side using small hand stitches such as the back stitch . You can also stitch them with a small sewing machine stitch.
  • Turn the pillows right side and use haemostats or tweezers to put stuffing into the corners, then the centre of each pillow. Do not overstuff.
  • Fold the unsewn edges of the pillows to form a hem and stitch the final edge together by hand.
