Preparing the Artwork
Cut your clip art, or the photo you want to use to make a dolls house miniature cake, out roughly from the card or photo paper you printed it on, leaving a wide border around the artwork.
Tape your artwork to a clean, flat, work surface. This will hold the paper steady while you work and will also prevent the paper from curling as it dries.
Coat your photo or clip art with a layer of Tar Gel Acrylic Medium This will protect your illustration and also make some of the colors look as if they are done with gel (on flag cakes) or will make a photo resemble a photo iced cake.
Leave the gel to dry. (If you don’t have any tar gel medium, you can used a clear gloss acrylic coating. You may need to use more than one coat.)
Beginning to Ice the Top
.When the gel is dry, you can add decorative icing flourishes to the top of your cake.
To Make a Patriotic Cake
The flag cake shown here has been coated with tar gel, and decorative peaks of icing will be applied to any white areas of the design.
To create the icing effect, the glue bottle was held straight above the white areas, and tiny dots of acrylic paint and medium mixture were pulled up into small peaks. The peaks were applied in a pattern similar to icing a real cake, by applying the peaks side by side to create even rows. The colored areas of the cake will be left as if colored with icing gels.
