Landscape Your Miniature Fire Base

Model railway ballast and aquarium gravel glued to florist foam make a base for a miniature fire.

Landscaping for your miniature fire should match the surroundings of your model scene, but appear to be safe for an outdoor fire.

  • Spray the piece of dry floral arrangement foam from the previous step with spray adhesive glue, or spread white pva glue over the entire surface.
  • Press a single layer of model railway ballast into the glue layer for the gravel effect shown above, or use dried sterile cactus soil for a bare earth effect. To create the effect of a gravel beach, small aquarium gravel was included in the ballast coating for the effect of small stones. To create more of a crushed stone base, you could use budgie (parakeet) grit instead of railway ballast.
  • When the ballast is securely attached to the foam, insert the battery cap through the slot. If your wire assembly is bulky, you may need to use a craft stick or knife, to carve out a channel on the underside of the foam to carry the wires away from your fire to wherever you will hide the battery.
