Prepare the Pieces
- Add dark brown or black lines to the parchment to make it resemble birch bark, or stamp it with tiny leaf stamps.
- Lay all four sides of the shade together on top of one another, matching all the edges.
- Prepare the lampshade for assembly by using a pin or awl to punch sewing holes through the edges of the shade panels (As you have them all on top of one another you can punch the holes through all four layers at once). Punch the holes 1/16 inch from the outside edge on both angled (side) edges.
- Line up the sides of the lampshade so that they are side by side as shown in the photo above.
Lace the Shade Together
- Beginning with two side of the shade, run a single piece of waxed linen, or two strands of embroidery cotton through the bottom hole on the shade.
- Take the thread across to the second side of the shade and run the thread through the corresponding hole, leaving a tail of thread at least ½ inch long below the start.
- Continue to lace from side to side until you have two sides completely laced.
- Cut off the thread and tuck it under the top two stitches on the inside of the shade.
- Tuck ¼ inch of the thread from the bottom of the shade into the bottom two stitches on the inside.
- Trim the threads.
- Continue to add sides until you have joined the final sides together.
