Add the Miniature Raccoon's Mask

By , About.com Guide

With the ears in place and a rough head shape started, it is time to add the raccoon's black mask.

Begin the process of adding the raccoon's mask by selecting a one inch length of fibres, about 1/4 inch wide.

Lay the fibres across the bridge of the muzzle going up toward the forehead. Begin to needle felt them in place by punching the needle across the black fibres down the centre line of the racoon's forehead. Hold the fibres flat and punch across the face to the outer edge of where you intend to place the eyes. Leave the ends of the black mask which stick out from the face loose, do not felt them.

Follow the same process on either side of the raccoon's face to set the black mask in place. Don't worry about the loose fibre ends, they will be trimmed later.

Don't over work your felting or you will make your raccoon smaller than the standard 1:12 dollhouse scale!

When you have the black mask in place, gather a similar size group of white fibres and felt them in place across the forehead immediately above the black mask using the same technique.

Finally add a group of brown or grey fibres, a little longer than the black or white group, immediately above the white band and below the ears across the top of the forehead. Once again, do not felt beyond the line of the eyes in the mask below. These fibres will stick out from the racoon's face (check your photo or the photos of the finished raccoon for reference).
