The Bottom Line

These tiny plastic tiles are a fast way to create miniature mosaics without first creating the tiles from polymer clay or other materials. The color range is good, with four related shades plus matching sand in a package. The tiles are a fairly even thickness, although they may not be exactly square.

Pros

  • Great size for miniatures.
  • Good color range plus matching sand for 'grout'.
  • Smooth plastic can be cut with craft knife or kitchen shears.

Cons

  • Plastic, will need to be modified to look like ceramic for most colors.
  • May be difficult to find, check scrapbook and card suppliers.

Description

  • Their size means these tiles can be used to represent 1 foot square floor or wall tiles in 1/4 inch scales.
  • Good for back splashes, bathroom tiling, or creating plant containers in 1/12 and 1/24 scale.
  • Spread glue on the surface to be 'tiled' and apply tiles with a small gap, sprinkle sand over for 'grout'.

Guide Review - Miniature Mosaic Craft Tiles

These tiny individual mosaic tiles by the Dutch Company, Leane Creatif, are approximately 3/16 of an inch square and 1/16 thick. (5mm by 1.5mm thick) Made of hard, smooth plastic, they come in a package of four colors plus a matching sand for grout. There are more than 150 tiles of each of four colors in a package.

The miniature mosaic tiles have been designed for use as decorations for greeting cards, but have lots of scope for the miniaturist. The plastic, although hard, can be cut with a craft knife or heavy kitchen shears, to trim tiles to hard to fit places. If you want to create mosaic table tops or flooring, or tile back splashes for 1:48 scale kitches, these may be a craft material you want to look out for.

Currently the miniature mosaics are sold as part of the Mylo and Friends line and seem to be available more widely in Europe, the UK and Canada than anywhere else. They can be found online through scrapbooking and rubber stamp suppliers.

Tips for Using Miniature Mosaic Tiles

To use these tiles mark your design out on card or heavy paper stock. Put a fairly thick coat of pva glue on the first inch of the design and apply your tiles, make sure the glue layer is not too thin.Leave a thin line between the tiles for 'grout' made by pouring the sand over the tile section before the glue dries. Brush the excess sand out of the design.
