If you need fast and easy edible miniature skulls, use commercial marshmallows. The skulls on this page were created following the same techniques used to mold the other miniature skulls in these instructions, the only difference was that marshmallows, gel icing, and sugar dragee's (tiny balls) were used to decorate the skulls after they were shaped.
These are great Halloween party decorations for cakes and cupcakes. You can also use them to quickly fill up a printable miniature coffin for a place setting or a themed party.
To shape the skulls from marshmallows you must have clean dry hands. Squash the lower third of a marshmallow to get a narrow jaw. Choose the best side for the face and pinch a nose into place. Use a toothpick or a thin skewer to make eye sockets, a nose socket, and a mouth. To make the mouth you can use the side of a toothpick, or make a number of small indentations with the end.
Decorate the marshmallow skulls with gel or regular icing from a tube. Or dip the end of a toothpick in a bit of icing and apply it to the eye holes, nose and mouth. Set dragees or small cake decorations into the eye sockets where they will be held in place by the icing or decorating gel.
Playing with your food was never so much fun!
