Provenance

By Lesley Shepherd, About.com

Definition: Provenance - is the information that comes with a collected object, information about its origin and its history of ownership. For valuable miniatures, provenance can be more important than the object itself, identifying it as being part of a famous collection, or belonging to a famous person. For example a Fabrege miniature which can be proved to have been commissioned by the Czar is more important than a similar miniature with a less famous owner.
Examples: The provenance of a miniature owned by famous individual may add to the miniature's value in a sale.
