Hemostat Definition

By Lesley Shepherd, About.com

Definition: Hemostat - Hemostats are medical clamps used for stopping blood flow in blood vessels. They resemble a pair of scissors with a clamp instead of blades on the end of the arms. For scale modelers and miniaturists they are useful clamping tools available in two main forms either locking or non locking:
  • Curved - useful for working around behind other objects.
  • Straight - useful for general purposes.
  • Hemostats are often used to add stuffing to tiny stuffed toys as well as their usual clamping function.

Pronunciation: he.mo.stat.
Alternate Spellings: Haemostat
Examples: Hemostats are very useful for clamping and maneuvering thin objects.
