Clean and Fill the Base Casts

We began with three miniature scale figures from Games Workshops, Return of the King series, Gollum, Sam and Frodo. These figures are 7/8 of an inch (20 mm) tall. The white metal castings are fairly clean, but there will be some bubbles that need filling and some areas where the casts need extra bits of metal filed off.

  • Remove any extra metal Use fine grit sandpaper and fine files plus a craft knife or a dentist’s tool to file and sand off any irregularities in the finish. (if your miniature might contain lead, read the article on read the article on safe handling of metal miniatures before filing or sanding. Use magnification to check how well you are doing.
  • Fill gaps and holes Fill any imperfections in the figures with Milliput or another metal filling epoxy.
  • Sand Filled Areas Use fine sandpaper to sand any filled areas down in order to blend the filler into the surrounding metal as much as possible.
  • Recreate Detail Lines Use a dentist’s tool to recreate lines if any end in the middle of a filled patch.
