If you built the basic baby house from Baltic birch plywood and intend to finish it with a clear wood stain or varnish, here are the materials you will need to finish the project.

To prepare Baltic Birch plywood to accept a finish that allows the wood to show through you will need.

  • White plastic eraser to remove pencil marks.
  • Fine grade sandpaper – I used a 320 and a 600 grit paper, which work well on the fine fibers of Baltic Birch. You could use an even finer grade if you feel you need it.
  • Hand sanding block
  • Detail sanding blocks These make it easier to get sandpaper into the edges to sand the straight drops in the quoins.
  • Rag and a tack cloth for removing dust particles before you apply finish.

To Create Quoins and Cornice Trim you will need:

  • Two to Four Lengths of Floor Molding 3/4 inch wide. (or other flat strip wood) the same length as your doors. The townhouse uses the break in the front as an equal spacing on either side of the door, marked by quoins. For this you will need three quoin strips. If you built a wider dollhouse, you may want to place four quoins, one on each side edge, one covering the door opening, and one a distance back from the center piece to make the dollhouse look like it has a quoined center section.
  • Crown molding A length of 3/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch deep crown molding, or another decorative molding to act as a cornice for your dollhouse, you will need a piece slightly wider than the overall width of the dollhouse.
  • A Hobby/craft Saw or something similar with a fine blade.
  • A Box Cutter or other knife you can use to carve back soft lumber to define the quoins.
  • If you prefer, you can use ready made quoins for the front of your house. They are carried by several dollhouse companies in the Do it Yourself section.
