Fit the Door Hinges

An overlay or cranked hinge has been used on the plywood doors of this baby house dolls house.

A recessed overlay or cranked hinge holds the door panels on this front opening baby house.

Determine the Hinge Position on the Doors

Before fitting the hinges on the doors, mark the hinge position. In this case the door hinges were set one inch down from the top of the door and one inch up from the bottom of the door. Taller or wider doors may need a third hinge near the center of the door. Make sure you position your hinges so that they will not interfere with movement of the shelves or roomboxes.

Recess the Hinges

To give the dolls house doors a neater outer appearance, the cranked or overlayed hinges are recessed into the back edge of the door. If you look closely at the photo of the hinge above, you can see where a chisel was used to cut out enough wood to allow the round barrel of the hinge to fit partially into the back of the door. This will give the hinge a neater appearance on the outside. The photo also shows how the cranked hinges are mounted so that the screws are not in the end grain of the wood. The hinges shown are not yet fully screwed in place.
