The dolls house and fashion doll scale printables found in these instructions will make brimmed paper hats or serve as patterns for fabric hats in four scales, 1:6, 1:12, 1:24, 1:48. The hats will also work for miniature stuffed bears, or to decorate other small animals (horses, rabbits etc.)
The hats can be made from ordinary printer paper and left as is, or decorated with ribbons, flowers or feathers. Instructions are included for creating a fabric texture from crumpled paper for more realistic hats.
This is a good project to experiment with to develop a range of brimmed hat styles. The brim on this pattern is set very wide, but can be trimmed to the size you require for a wide range of hat styles. Likewise the hat band can be left wide for a high crowned hat, or cut down to make a lower band or boater style. When you find a combination you like, you can either print the sheet on printable fabric, like the EQ cotton lawn reviewed here, or use the paper pieces as patterns for your own fabric creations. If making hats from light weight fabrics you may need to stiffen the brim and possibly the crown with a light weight iron on interfacing. Alternatively you can glue the fabric to lightweight card or heavier weight paper to stiffen it.
