To make twisted cord trim, cut full six strand sections of embroidery thread to a length at least 1/3 longer than you need to completely trim the finished project. For variegated cords, use three coordinating or contrasting colors, for plain twisted cords, use three lengths of the same color.
- Wrap clear adhesive tape around one set of the embroidery cords ends to hold them together like a shoelace.
- Hold the taped ends securely in a third hand clamp or tape them to a waterproof surface.
- Begin to twist the three lengths of embroidery thread together, making sure to keep the untaped ends free. When you have the cord twisted as tightly together as you would like close to the taped ends, move down the cord continuing to keep the twist even, and the non taped ends free. Don't worry if the twisted end of the cord folds back on itself.
- When the entire length of cord is evenly twisted, Tape the remaining ends together, and pull the twisted cord out to its full length and hold both ends in place with weights or clamps to the table top.
- Use a spray bottle to lightly dampen the twisted cord and leave the dampened cord in place, held by the weights or clamps, until it is dry.
- When the cord is dry you should be able to remove the weights without having the cord untwist.
To Use the Cord
Lay the cord (with the ends still taped) along the seam of the cushion or upholstery you wish to trim. For a cushion, lay the trim in the ditch between the back and front of the cushion, with the trim beginning in the center of one side.
Use tiny stitches to catch and hold the trim in place to the cushion seam.
When you have sewn trim completely sewn around the cushion, trim the ends, overlap them and sew them tucked in behind the already sewn trim.
