What Draws your Eye?-Choosing a Period/Theme for a Dolls House Collection

Can you create a collection around items you have now?

Lesley Shepherd

The first step in finding a focus for a doll house miniature collection is to work out the things that appeal to you most. Some things that might create a start for your collection are:

  • A Period of History: Victorian and Federal/Georgian are very popular but Modern or particular historical architectural scales are popular too (Craftsman, Mackintosh).
  • A Particular Passion: Do you collect shoes? Plants? Toys? Musical instruments? Items we collect for ourselves are widely available in miniature scales. Switching to miniature may let you have a larger collection!
  • The Need to Tell a Story: Do you want to show a moment in time, a piece of local history? What goes on in a working house? If telling a story with a vignette appeals, will you be happy with a single scene or will you need a related series? Does the word scene mean a display box or a building (or series of buildings)?

Once you focus on what appeals to you most, you can work out a display method that suits your time and budget.
