Shape the Ankle

Create the Basic Leg Shape Use a toothpick to hollow out the centre of the ankle just above the heel on your foot. Roll a cylinder of polymer clays thinner than the heel and insert it into the hole you just made. Roll out a thin sheet of clay and wrap your new leg addition with the sheet of clay. Blend the sheet of clay into the leg and join it into the top of the foot above the heel. Roll the leg/ankle area between your hands if it is too wide for your foot (or your doll).

Add the Ankle Bone On the outside of your foot, opposite the big toe, add an ankle bone above the heel area, by adding in a small ball of clay. Blend the ankle bone into the foot. You can blend polymer clay with your finger, or for finer detail you can use a soft watercolor or clay blending brush with short hairs.

How Much Leg Do You Need? Before you proceed any farther, determine how much of the doll's leg will be seen and where you want it to bend. If you want the leg to bend at the knee, make the leg end just below the knee and create a channel around the leg where you can wind a piece of wire to hold the leg at the correct angle. If you want the doll to stand on it's own feet without a doll stand, fix the legs into a continuous wire armature that links the doll's head and legs.

The legs shown here will be inserted into a wire armature and will not be bending at the knee.
