The Bottom Line

American Miniaturist was Ashdown Inc.'s first venture into the American dollhouse miniature scene. The magazine continues to use articles from past issues of its UK parent magazine, Dolls House World, along with new articles from American contributors. The main articles tend to feature American collections and artisans. This is a good little magazine but the projects lack some of the depth possible in its larger format sisters, Dolls House World and Dollhouse Miniatures.

Pros

  • Small size format is easy to carry with you
  • Published monthly
  • Lots of Small Projects
  • At least one feature on an American Artisan each month

Cons

  • Lots of sharing with back list from other Ashdown magazines
  • 100 small pages with regular type feels like a low calorie magazine size

Description

  • Monthly, small format, easily packed publication.
  • Lots of clearly explained general projects.
  • More American themed projects than the other Ashdown miniature magazines.
  • Three or four features and up to ten small projects in each magazine.

Guide Review - Review of American Miniaturist Magazine

American Miniaturist is a small format, high production value magazine, part of Ashdown's craft line. Like the other Ashdown miniature magazines, American miniaturist is available as an innovative online subscription for a reduced rate over a regular print version. Currently the IMag Version is available for a 19.95 for one year, the print version is $65 for 12 issues.

The magazine's layout and illustrations are clear and appealing and the magazine has a sturdy cover and binding, giving it a longer life as a reference than magazines printed with flimsier stock. The news and features are all very American, but some of the more general projects may have originally appeared in Dolls House World.

The magazine differs from the other Ashdown miniature magazine in having projects in a wide range of scales, including N or 1:144, many of which use everyday or easily available materials. The magazine is designed to appeal to miniaturists who like to create their own miniatures with simple techniques whenever possible.
