When you have a sufficiently long braid begin to sew the center of your rug. You do not need to stop braiding to start sewing the rug . Just tape the end of your braid to keep it from unravelling and sew the rug until you have a foot or so of braid left before you start braiding again.

To begin sewing the rug, take the knotted end and leaving the knot free, begin to wrap the braid around in a circle, or for an oval rug, make a line of braid two thirds of the length you want your overall rug to be, then reverse the braid on itself to create a double line. Thread your needle with matching thread, and ladder stitch the edges of the braid together along the length of the braid. (see the photo above). When you have the centre sewn, continue to add braid to the edge of the rug, making sure you flatten out the braid and sew the edges together neatly.

When you have finished your rug, untie the knot of threads at the center and spread the floss out over the underside of the rug. Stitch the loose ends in place then dab the ends with a bit of glue or fray check to secure the loose ends. Do the same thing when you are finished sewing the final bit of braid. Tuck the loose ends of thread under the outside edge of the rug and stitch them to the base of the rug. Trim the ends and secure them with a dab of fray check or glue.
