The most popular poinsettias are shades of red, but there are deep burgundy poinsettias, pink and white poinsettias, white with pink centers, solid pink, red with white edges, and thicker 'double' flowered poinsettias with colored bracts that curve backwards. Poinsettias are often sold with two or more varieties in a pot, so if you want to make a pot of miniature paper poinsettias do double duty as a flower arrangement, make stems of more than one color for a single pot.
To "plant" your miniature poinsettias in a container, fill your scale miniature pot with a piece of dry floral arrangement foam and apply a thin layer of glue to the top surface. Sprinkle some colored sand, embossing powder or dried potting soil onto the glue layer and press your 'soil' in place. Allow to dry.
When your pot is prepared, create a poinsettia plant by inserting three to five poinsettia stems into the center of the pot, angling each stem and making sure you keep the stems spaced enough to show off the poinsettia blooms. For Christmas village displays you can use fine jewellers chain and dry florist foam to make miniature hanging baskets 'planted' for winter scenes with lycopodium moss and miniature pine cones to set off a few of poinsettia blooms. The hanging baskets can be hung from village buildings or lamps.
Have fun, and remember you will get better with every miniature you attempt! Your first poinsettias should be considered a practise run.
