Bears are Determined to Have Their Own Character

From Lesley Shepherd, About.com

Although made with similar materials and in the same way, Josephine's bears often demand their own character.

"May I be of assistance Madam?" Each of Josephine Parnell's Bears has it's own unique personality.

Like dolls house dolls, Josephine's bears have personalities and interests that come through in the way she finishes and portrays them. "I do enjoy creating characters that I haven't done before or those that are a little more quirky, like the rat catcher I made a couple of weeks ago. If I am 'on a roll' with making I will make a few bears all in one go and then line them up and let them speak to me. They will tell me who they are and get dressed accordingly."… "As I normally work to order I start making a bear with the character already in mind and the proportions are incorporated from the start but it is true that some bears are just determined to have their own character from the start…. Sometimes it has a stance or expression that is something different entirely and I will dress it as what ever it seems to be wanting to be, and make another Bear for the order." Josephine's shopkeeper is sidling up to the counter to ask madam what she would like.
