Some miniatures can be used for many different purposes. These tiny woven birdcages are a cute addition to a dolls house porch, but they can be filled with flowers for a miniature wedding scene, or used as decorations for full sized wedding cakes or as wedding favors or shower decorations.
These tiny bird cages use two basic weaving techniques. The main part of the cage is formed with twining or pairing, and the shape of the cage is set with wire woven in a three rod wale pattern. Both of these techniques are also used in simpler woven baskets for beginners. The Simple Miniature Flower Gathering Basket is woven in pairing with a three rod wale edge, while the Oval Market or Easter Basket uses a three rod wale pattern to set the sides in addition to pairing. Either of these projects are a good way to learn how to weave in miniature using wire and thread.
