Glass Paints That Stand Up to Washing

Monday September 1, 2008

There are lots of ways to mimic stained glass in miniature, but not many of them will stand up to washing in the dishwasher. Pebeo make a range of transparent and frosted glass paints and markers, which can be baked in an oven to make them extremely durable.

I've been experimenting with various effects on sheets of glass and aluminium foil, as I want to make an oasis for a miniature Christmas display. The Vitrea 160 paints from Pebeo can be mixed, and let me get an effect of extra depth by painting on both sides of a sheet of inexpensive glass, or on the top surface of a mirror. You can apply these paints to any item that you can bake at 325 degrees F for forty minutes to cure. The advantage is that the piece can be washed without harming the stained glass effect. Great for icy ponds, water under scale boat hulls, or anything that might collect dust over time.
