Doll Finishing Tips and Tutorials

Wednesday April 23, 2008

I started the series on sculpting miniature doll parts based on body proportions because some of you have told me you can't find figures in the scale or age range you are looking for to fit in your airplanes, drive your boats or wrestle your steers. I'm not sure why doll house miniaturists turn to their own sculptures less often than those of you who sculpt gaming figures. Perhaps in games where figures take a central role, you have to make your own. In other scales, people often avoid figures entirely.

As the figure sculpture instructions are shown in 1:12 scale, I've put together a list of doll accessories and techniques featured in web tutorials. You can find everything from how to wig a doll, make shoes, make a medieval dress, through to how to sculpt all kinds of imaginary figures and animals.

If you haven't started trying to sculpt a figure, look through this list for inspiration from the talented sculptors who are sharing their tips. Once you're inspired get some clay, or paper clay, or air dry clay and get sculpting! Even if it is a small rat, or a turtle, or something other than a person. You'll be surprised at what you can create! Everyone has to start somewhere and making figures takes a bit of practise, but the techniques are the same regardless of which scale you work in.
